Bettering Your Life Through Gimlets and Cream

So, this is funny. I got nominated for a Books for a Better Life award. This is an award for SELF HELP books. The money raised through the award ceremony goes to MS Research, so that's fantastic, a wonderful cause, etc.... But self help? ME?

Anyway, we had a good time, and I saw, bizarrely, three people I'd known from my dead-end government job days. More bizarrely, they were actually three people I LIKED.

I was nominated in the "Inspirational Memoir," along with Brooke Shields, Jeannette Walls, Cindi Broaddus and.... Joan Didion. And I totally Nadered Joan's ass! At least that's my theory. Because instead of The Year of Magical Thinking, the award was won by Jeannette Walls' The Glass Castle. Which is supposed to be very good.

Oh - and Books For a Better Life thinks my name is Julie Powell Little. Which is kind of cute. I might starting using it.

PS That Nader joke isn't mine. Wish I could claim it, but it was originally cracked by my publicist, Michelle, who is much more brilliant than I am.

So when you're blogging jokes that your publicist gives you, you have officially crossed through the looking glass. You're on your way to actually achieving meta-status.

I know, it's totally disgusting. The woman who won the award in my category thanked her publicist, and I thought, "Ew, gross"... until I realized I'd have done exactly the same thing if I'd been up there.

It's a bizarro world....

So there's an "inspirational memoir" category for self help books? That's a new one for me.

Anyway, congrats on the nom!

Julie, I read your book for the first time last week. (I can't believe I never came across the Julie/Julia project before now!) I found the reading bittersweet. It reminded me of myself, living in a crappy city apartment, before married bliss and baby, cooking part out of the joyous rapture of the art, and part of desperate self-rescue from monotonous, anonymous existence.

But it also reminded me of what it felt like to have the whole world stretched out in front of you - endless possibilities and paths to follow - and that now my "path" is pretty much set. I'm a housewife / new mommy living in a nice house in the suburbs. Don't misunderstand - I am ten times more passionate about my husband and little boy as I ever was about "endless possibilities" but still...

I felt a pang of jealousy for you and your project experience. My husband says that I should look at the melancholy as new inspiration to pursue passions beyond the daily life I find myself in, and perhaps I will!

So thank you for writing your book, your blog, and for having the guts to start your project in the first place. ha ha... in all of my love of cooking and culinary experiments, you could NEVER get me to cook LIVER! (But we live on the chesapeake bay, and I have no qualms about murdering shellfish... )

Best of luck to you, and please keep writing!

PS - Where can we find your tour schedule?

I suppose "The Julie Julia Project: Totally Nadering Joan Didion's Ass" would be pretty much totally inscrutable as a paperback title. Maybe the sequel?

I can kind of see the self-help angle, only because your a lot of your readership seemed to use your blog as such. i could not get over the comments like (not exact quotes, mind you) 'keep going julie, we NEED you to keep going!!" etc. So while not your intent, surely many used your project to get themselves "through issues". Just my opinion.

Just remember: you're drunk enough, you're profane enough, and, doggone it...people like you.

At least you didn't lose to Brooke Shields.

Hi Julie,

I just finished your book. Ohmygod you're good but don't let it go to your head.
:-)

Here's the review I wrote on my web site: www.6seconds.org

I hope it sells a ton of books for you. I'm kind of in the Self-Help world too (but mostly for corporations) and as you can see in the review I totally get why the book deserves the award. Send them my review and tell them they made a big-o mistake giving the award to someone else.

It is not everyone's business to write such a great post, one person in a million can write such a beautiful post and you are one of those millions. I hope that you will write more beautiful posts in life and also hope that you will keep climbing the ladder of achievement in your life, very few people do this but I have full hope from you.
