Mzungu observations

Got back yesterday from two days spent in Eloui, a Maasai village up on this mountainside near Kenya. Mindbogglingly beautiful, and a way of life at once intimidatingly difficult and alluring. You get used to sights like four-year-olds industriously washing remnants of cow blood out of tin cups with dirt and dung so they can drink some tea. The second night I slept in the Orpul, which is a sort of Maasai boy's club-cum-field hospital. Ate all sorts of raw goat parts, drank tea made of various roots mixed with goat meat and fat, and slept on a bower of green branches under the stars, which is not as comfortable as you might think. Was entranced by all of it, but sure was ready for a shower, a nap and a beer, in that order, when I got back to Arusha.

I recommend a beer before AND after the nap. :) I'm almost done with Julie and Julia, loving it so far!

Have not seen any more posts for a few days. I hope you are not retching out your guts from eating raw goat. Goat is like lamb very tasty. Raw or rare lamb is very precarious, due to the taxoplasmosis (sp?) virus that is commen w/ grazing animals and cats that are allowed to roam Really enjoyed your book and am pleasantly surprised to find this blog. Looking forward to future posts from you. Thanks, D.

Please excuse the typo meant to write common. I am sort of a freak about spelling. I think it is because my Mom was an middle school Engish teacher. D.

Hope you are rested and full of beer and enjoying your adventures. I just finished J&J and am new to
blog-dom but had to say BRAVO! It sat on my bookshelf for too long (due to lack of time, not lack of interest). I heard about the movie and Meryl Streep and Amy Adams and how weird when the game "if your life was ever made into a movie, who would you want to play you" becomes a realistic conversation. I've worked on a few Nora Ephron movies and experienced some fun Nora orchestrated food tastings; every kind of cherry in season from the Seattle Public Market during "Sleepless in Seattle" and a multitude of pies in Austin on "Michael" (the audience would just KNOW if it was a bad prop pie, right?). She is the only person I've been around that can give a one word critique of something she's just eaten that will actually make the food embarrased NORA (verbatim): "This soup is...stupid". SOUP: curdle, curdle, aaagghhhh. I tell you this in the hope you can experience all the savory and sweet fun I'm sure the movie experince will be and that you won't one day find yourself in a crepe-a-thon, cooking crepes for 150 cast and crew members (unless you want to of course). I know when I was reading J&J, I really wanted one of your crepes, as opposed to one from my favorite crepe stand in Paris. So, it's not a stretch that everyone else will feel the same. Good luck. And last but not least, I can't explain why it makes me feel SO GOOD to know that you, the smart witty oh-so-human writer with endless potential is not toiling away with a bunch of Repulicans. But it does.

I am so proud of you, Julie!! I just read about Merle Streep doing Julia in YOUR book. Where have I been? Well, not in touch obviously. But I'm thinking of you and your success, knew you could do it!! Love, Grammy
